WHAT SCIENCE HAS FORGOTTEN What Science Has Forgotten What Science Has Forgotten What Science Has Forgotten SELECT CATEGORY Sensitive Gaia Sense of Wonder Body Earth What Science Has Forgotten Senses and Suki Seeing the Invisible IoT=IoH BEYOND THE IoT ABOUT THIS SITE What Science Has Forgotten Many people think that science will eventually be able to explain everything that happens in nature, and that technology will be able to reproduce it. Perhaps that is so, but even then, that day lies far into the future. Probably a more likely scenario is that the further science and technology advance, the deeper the mysteries of the world will grow. Even with topics that we believe science has solved for good, when you take a closer look, you'll find that plenty of problems have slipped through the cracks or been swept under the carpet. Furthermore, these are often the issues that are closest to us and most important in our daily lives. Take hunches or intuitions or premonitions, for example. They may have rational-sounding explanations, but our gut feelings tell us something is not quite right after all. Such examples are not at all uncommon. When you think about it, there are lots of things that modern civilization has forgotten all about. Maybe the time has come to stop for a moment and try to remember. The seeds of forthcoming science and technology are impatiently waiting to be discovered among the things we have left behind. HORIBA, Ltd. BEYOND THE IoT When escalators were first introduced in department stores, people often got stuck or fell over in front of the steps because they couldn’t get the timing right. It happened to quite a few people, young and old, men and women alike. IoT=IoH The term IoT (Internet of Things) is frequently heard these days. The basic idea is to create new values by connecting everything to the Internet, from household appliances to factory machinery, cars, even food. By networking information from different “things,” and by measuring, assembling and processing that information, many redundancies, inconveniences and risks can be avoided, which should lead to a better society, or so it is believed. Seeing the Invisible We shouldn’t let signs and indications slip by. That was the starting point of both design and analysis. Perhaps the next field to analyze will also appear among the stuff that has fallen through the cracks between our current words, numbers and symbols. Senses and Suki The color of red hot steel, the signs of the mountains, the progress of fermentation, the appearance of a wooden framework… Skilled craftsmen can discern minuscule changes with their senses. What Science Has Forgotten There are many topics that we believe science has already solved for good, but when you take a closer look, you'll find that plenty of problems have slipped through the cracks or simply been conveniently swept aside. Hunches, intuitions and premonitions, for example, may have rational-sounding explanations, but our gut feelings often tell us they are not quite convincing after all. Sense of Wonder Looking up at the night sky or at a beach, or peering closely at an insect or a flower, almost every child is astonished at the marvels of nature. Such a sense of wonder is also indispensable for science and technology, and even for logic and analysis. Perhaps the mind of a child who is moved by mysteries is the origin of creativity. Sensitive Gaia Like a single organism, the Earth has built up a rich and complex environment through metabolism. The richness of the Earth is of course profoundly connected to the diversity of its life forms. The evolution of life has also been the evolution of the planet itself. Body Earth 70% of the Earth's surface is covered with water. The human body is also 70% water, and its salinity is the same as that of the oceans back in the Cambrian period, when we vertebrates first appeared. That is to say, it is a memory of the seas 500 million years ago. We carry our planet's memories in our bodies. prev next All Seeing the Invisible Senses and Suki Sensitive Gaia Sense Of Wonder Body Earth What Science Has Forgotten ? 1996-2013 HORIBA, Ltd.
